What is Copyright?
Copyright law is covered by Title 17 of the United States Code and is designed to reward authors, artists, and the like who create texts, images, and other works, while at the same time facilitating access to these works by the general public. Copyright is intended to be a balancing act: creators need to have control over their own works, but this control has certain limits designed to encourage the exchange of ideas and information, especially in an educational setting.
Copyright Applies on the Internet
Don't think that just because it is easy to copy email messages, images, or other documents, that it is necessarily legal to do so. It could be a violation to post another person's paper, image, or even email message without first obtaining that person's permission. You can, however, feel free to link to page or document that is already on the web, as long as the owner of the page doesn't specifically forbid the creation of links.
